Road accidents and lawlessness: I blame VID

Published on

EDITOR – I write this letter with a heavy heart.
We are constantly losing relatives and friends in horrific road accidents, not necessarily because our roads are bad, but because of reckless drivers.
I used to think kombi and taxi drivers were the worst, but I have come to realise that we have many so-called drivers in this country with genuine licences, but can’t drive.
I hate to say that the majority of drivers these days actually bought their licences straight from the Vehicle Inspection Department (VID).
Vanotozodzidzira kutyaira vega vatova nezvitambi kudhara.
This is where tragedy strikes because they would not have been taught how to drive and observe road rules.
It becomes worse when it comes to night driving, which by the way, unlike ZRP, VID does not teach.
As long as drivers do not exercise caution and corruption remains rampant at VID, many people are going to continue dying on our roads.
My call to VID is, stop this business of being bribed and giving licences to incompetent drivers just because of money.
Money will buy the licence, but not the good driving.
Cash will buy the licence, but will cost innocent lives in future.
I blame VID for the bad drivers we have today.
Heads must roll.
