Support wheat farmers

Published on

EDITOR –I think Government should seriously consider assisting winter wheat farmers so that money is not wasted on imports.
I read an article in your paper which pointed out that there has been a decline in the hectarage for this season and it is sad that as a nation we are failing to properly plan ahead especially after we have emerged victorious and are in power with no one frustrating our efforts as in the Inclusive Government.
Where are we failing when it comes to wheat?
This failure to put enough wheat seed will no doubt adversely affect the production of winter wheat.
If the hectarage continues to decline it means that this country will depend on imports for a long time which is not healthy for the country’s economy.
It is imperative for Government to support farmers by offering competitive prizes for the commodity.
Government should create a situation whereby the country relies on imports to augment the gap left by local farmers and not rely on imports to feed the nation.
Whatever that is done should be in line with the Government plans under the Zimbabwe Agenda for Sustainable Socio-Economic Transformation (Zim-ASSET) to support the agriculture sector in ensuring food security.
