EDITOR — The supposed furore over calls for a Robert Mugabe Day is the work of retrogressive minds in our midst. It is not a secret that most of his life, President Robert Mugabe has played a significant role in making Zimbabwe a country it is today.
Honouring the great work done by a great man for his country through a public holiday would not be a bad idea after all but it’s not enough given how much he has done for his people and the downtrodden peoples of this world.
He sacrificed his life, fighting for social justice for the Zimbabwean people who ended British rule, and today as a nation, we are enjoying the freedom that came along with his sacrifice.
Not only did his great work end when we gained freedom, but he continues to be an inspiration to many as a role model and the way he has touched the lives of people in his country.
Although such a day may be seen as just honouring the president of Zimbabwe, which seems not to make sense to ‘some’ people, the day will not be crucial to him only but also to us, the people of this country.
Such a day can serve to bring the people together in honouring our heritage and remembering where we came from to be what we are today, especially our fight against imperialism.
